My Sandy update

For those of you who expressed concern…

We survived Hurricane Sandy.  Some roof shingles blew off of the house, but no real damage.  Even all my trees are still standing, which is shocking considering what I see in my neighbors’ yards.  But some folks had it worse.  A lot worse. My heart goes out to them.  I feel blessed for what I have. Perhaps unfairly so.

I’m not sure what’s going on with my job, or if I’ll have one for awhile. My company is contracted to commission a radio system in some of the underground rail tunnels in the area. Last I heard, most if not all of those tunnels were flooded, and I’m sure our equipment is too. Not much we can do, since the #1 priority is to get trains running again. As I type this, an email arrived announcing “all work is cancelled until further notice”.

The family is sleeping in the basement tonight. It’s warmer down there. It’s getting a bit chilly upstairs. We’ve been without electricity for just over 24 hours (I’m typing this on my phone). It’s not much, all things considered, but I’ll deal. I know some people are seeking hotel rooms, but not me. Those rooms belong to people who don’t have a habitable home at all, not for those whose home currently lacks amenities like mine.

Not much to say on the diabetes front. I visited family with power tonight, and changed my infusion set there. I figure it’s better than doing it by candlelight.  My extra Novolog is warming up in the fridge, but I expect it will be OK since it won’t get over 60 degrees F in there. I might bundle it next to those cold packs they get shipped in (still frozen) just to be extra sure.

Please don’t think I’m looking for sympathy. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I am extremely grateful for how well I made it through the storm.  I’m safe, and my whole family is safe. That’s what’s important.

And for all my D-friends in Sandy’s path, could you please leave a comment and let me know how you’re doing? A simple “I’m OK” would mean a lot. And if you need anything from any of any of us, please ask.

Thanks.

  4. Scott… I’m very glad everything’s okay there. I had to laugh at your set change. Changed mine by candlelight last night, then the power came back on about an hour later.

For once, my neighborhood was one of the least affected by the storm. Way less destruction than the Derecho storm a few months ago.

    Stay warm. And safe.

  6. Thanks for checking in. Glad to know that things were not worse for you. Being without power is a bummer but a manageable bummer. Still keeping everyone up there in my prayers. So much devastation.
