As someone whose been to more than his share of emergency rooms in his lifetime, I find this billboard mildly disturbing.

  1. We have a few digital billboards that display our hospitals wait-time. The whole sigh is like a TV so the entire display will rotate through all three hospital names, location and their wait-times for our area. The first time I saw it I all I could think of was, if I’m hurt do they expect me to drive to the closest one or the hospital with the shortest wait-time?

  2. I think the idea is actually the opposite. I think they are encouraging people to go to urgent care instead of the ER. If you know you can’t be seen immediately, maybe you will leave the ER to the people who really need it and instead go to the place that is supposed to take care of you.

    • That might be the case in the scenario Chris described in the previous comment, but the photo I posted is most certainly a paid advertisement for this hospital. They’ve got other billboards around that promote the idea of “shortest wait times” and the like. Besides, there are no Urgent Care Facilities in this area. Your idea of discouraging ER visits, though, could certainly be an unintended benefit of these types of signs.
