Random Thursday thoughts

Rather than one big thing, just a handful of little things:

  • I’m beginning to think the name Katie/Katy may soon overtake Sara/Sarah as the unofficial Most-Common-Woman’s-Name in the DOC. Thankfully (or not), Scott still holds a commanding lead in the Men’s Name category.
  • Speaking of unofficial races, (No More Shots) Shannon has long-held the record for most comments on this blog, but Scott K (‘s Diabetes) is closing in. We’re talking single-digits, people!
  • Lately I’ve been contemplating getting my own domain name for this site and losing the dot-WordPress-dot-com. Is it worth the investment, and does it really make a difference in perception or credibility anyway? I welcome your feedback. (RollingInThed-dot-com? What the heck is Thed?)
  • Speaking of domain names, Sugabetic is now SarahKaye.me.  She recognizes that there there’s more to life than diabetes, and how can you not define yourself by your disease if that’s all you write about (and call yourself)? Makes sense to me.
  • At the end of last week, I was completely out of ideas and thought this would be a slow blogging week. But a late-Friday tweet from Abby (about looking up carbs in an Auntie Anne’s pretzel) began the inspiration for what ultimately became a five-day-blogging week. It’s funny how these things happen.
  • If you’re one of the people who have gone so far as to threaten DiabetesDad and his family because of a blog post: STOP IT!!!
  • This is not Bolus-Worthy. (my roll of Charmin Ultra later confirmed that it’s loaded with indigestible sugar alcohols, too)

BirthdayCake

Thanks to everyone who extended their birthday wishes on Tuesday! Also, thank you so much to those of you who left your comments about living happily with diabetes on my post yesterday — I’m hoping that post -with its comments – will reassure and comfort those parents of CWD’s who are feeling hopeless.

  1. Scott, people will find you, with or without the “wordpress.com”. Small investment, so don’t worry about it either way. Ultimately, it’s the content, not the domain name, that drives viewers. That’s my two cents.

  2. Oh it’s ON .. I will maintain my record of leaving the most comments. 🙂 And happy belated birthday!!! Sorry I’m late – it’s been a crazy week filled with unexpected dr’s appointments, low heart rates (not mine), all clears, work, and life in general 🙂 Hope it was a good one, though, friend!

And we bought the url for my site, too, but haven’t used it… I’ve been stalling because I’ve heard horror stories about moving everything over. Could be just me overthinking/worrying, though 😉

  3. I don’t know. You can get domain names these days pretty cheap. ($20/year at GoDaddy.) My boss often just buys them to hold on to them for future ideas. I might do the same when it seems reasonable. (Not enough people view my site on a daily basis to make it worth it right now.) Is it necessary? No – Google will still find you.

  4. I love the idea of the domain name.
That cake looks delicious but the thought of a roll of soiled toilet paper is not. Sugar alcohols wreck my innards as well.
Scott has gotta be the most common name in the DOC for dudes. I can’t keep y’all straight!

  11. And as for the going to a dot-com name, it’s really easy-peasy. Just think of one you know you want to stick with and just purchase it on GoDaddy. I can help you with the rest if you’d like – just email me. 🙂

  12. I’d say get the domain name. I only pay $10 per YEAR through GoDaddy. Shout out to the Katie’s in the house!

  13. Thanks for the feedback, guys. I was actually thinking along the lines of the $18/year plan that WordPress.com promotes. Saves me the trouble of having to find someone to host the content and do real coding. (I used to enjoy writing code, but now I just like writing prose). Definitely some options to consider.
